Whole Lotta Red is Atlanta rapper Playboi Carti’s forthcoming sophomore studio album and the follow-up to his critically acclaimed May 2018 release, Die Lit. On August 18, 2018, a recording of Carti leaked in which he was conversing with an affiliate about the album’s creative direction. When questioned about the project’s title, he revealed the name “Whole Lotta Red.” In his June 12, 2019, cover story with The FADER, Carti indirectly revealed that the album would boast guest appearances from Trippie Redd and Gunna. Production on the album was said to be handled by frequent collaborator Pi'erre Bourne, Maaly Raw, Richie Souf, Roark Bailey, and Don Cannon, among others.

During his performance at The Rave / Eagles Club on July 28, 2019, Carti announced to the crowd that his sophomore studio album would be released “in the next 60 days.” He would also add that there would be no guest appearances, contrary to what was reported a month prior:

“I’m trying to drop that shit in the next 60 days… I ain’t gon' lie. It feel like we worked too hard for this moment. So, I'ma do this shit with no features.”

What does the album's title refer to?

The album’s title might be referring to Carti’s well known affiliation with the Pirus or Bloods, both of whom are known for their excessive usage of red in their clothing to differentiate from other gangs. It could also be a nod to the solid red cover art used for most of Carti’s oldest soundcloud material which are regarded as some of the most notable songs his discography has to offer.
